Chapter 12
Chloe giggled to herself. Tonight was going to be the night when she finally told Richard about the baby growing inside her. She couldn’t help but be excited. There was no way anything bad would happen when she told him. There couldn’t be. This was Richard, not David. She needed to convince herself of that more than anyone else.
“What?” Richard looked up from kissing her neck. He panted as he waited for her to respond.
“Nothing.” Chloe hated not telling him. Luckily, a jar of Prego spaghetti sauce was lying on the bed upstairs at this moment. This was the start of her way of telling him. She just needed to make sure they headed upstairs to have sex and not have a repeat from yesterday. As fun as it was on the couch, it would completely ruin what she had planned.
“Okay.” He went back to kissing her neck. Then he went lower. And lower.
By the time he started to unbutton her pants, Chloe wasn’t thinking about heading upstairs. She was thinking about him going down on her and using his tongue as eloquently as he always did.
The doorbell stopped any further developments.
Richard stopped what he was doing. He looked up at Chloe and then stood up. Adjusting his clothes, he gave her a kiss and then made his way toward the front door. She wanted to beg him not to answer it, but she knew he couldn’t do that. This was a crucial part of being the only doctor in a small town: no call or knock could be ignored, and it could be an emergency. She was prepared to share her future husband with the whole town, but during times like this, it was extremely frustrating.
Her hand went to her stomach. Another little quiver fluttered and she swore it wasn’t anything other than the baby growing there. She prayed that Richard would handle the news with happiness. They hadn’t really talked about when they wanted to have children, just that they wanted to eventually have their own family, assuming they’d plan for it somewhere later down the road after a few years of marriage. Although they weren’t even married yet, it was going to happen sooner rather than later. One interruption in her plan changed her positive attitude. Now she worried that he would run for the hills the moment he found out about the baby.
“But I can’t do that.” Chloe heard Richard say to someone. She finally snapped out of the constant stream of her thoughts and perked her ears up to listen.
Worried, she got up and buttoned the top two buttons on her high waist pants. The agitation in his voice was what got her attention. It obviously wasn’t a patient, since he would never talk to someone in that manner.
“Richard, what is…”
Standing at the door was an older woman and a young child. She had to look back and forth, since the boy resembled a younger, child-like version of Richard. Without saying anything, Chloe turned around and headed toward the sliding door that led to the patio.
